What Does It Take to Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License?

The first step is to find out if you are eligible:

Log onto e-Services.

Under Driver Services, click "More Driver Services" then "Driving Privilege Lookup."

Enter your Driver's License number.

It should read "Eligible - Does not currently hold this privilege." If it says anything other than this, you must contact a DVS station to determine why you are not eligible to obtain a commercial driver's license.

To obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit, you must pass three tests: general knowledge, combination, and air brakes. This test can be administered at most DVS or DMV stations.

Studying for this exam involves completing your online Driver Theory training, which you will receive after enrollment, and studying an app you can simply download on your phone.

Once you have completed your online Driver Theory training and are studying the app, we recommend you go to your local station and take a test for those three endorsements.

A Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) is valid for 6 months and allows you to drive with an individual who holds a license of the same class in which you are driving.

As of January 1, 2024, Minnesota passed a law that now states if you have ever held a CDL prior to this date, you are exempt from needing to retest for that permit. You can simply just reapply for it.
